Connor (Lewis MacDougall) is a 12-year-old boy who becomes the man of the house, taking charge of leading it after his parents separate. With his young mother (Felicity Jones) sick with cancer, the boy will try to overcome all his fears and phobias with the help of a monster (Liam Neeson). The boy’s fantasies, fairy tales and imaginary stories will not only come face to face with reality, but also with his cold and calculating grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). With this new film, J. A. Bayona ends a trilogy on mother-son relationships that he began with The Orphanage and continued with The Impossible.
